Big crowdfunding platforms such as Kickstarter have gotten a lot of attention in recent years.

But Karen Rands wants people to consider a different form of investing in new concepts and companies — angel investing.

Rands was the keynote speaker at a recent event hosted by Sarasota-based Bridge Angel Investors and the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee. She’s the author of “Inside Secrets to Angel Investing,” which she calls a roadmap to becoming an angel investor.

At the “How to Create Wealth for an Entrepreneurial Ecosystem” event, Rands referred to herself as a “compassionate capitalist,” saying she pays it forward by investing in startups that create jobs for communities.

Rands advocates people adding angel investing to their portfolios. “You don’t have to be an entrepreneur if you can invest in an entrepreneur,” she says.

Her specific suggestion: invest in five companies in five years, or, what would be even better, she says, is to invest in 10 companies in five years. “Make a plan to do this,” Rands says.

Some of the companies will fail, she warns, but that’s a fact of life. One tip she has is to co-invest with a group, such as Bridge Angel Investors, to help minimize risk.
