That’s no couch change: St. Pete sofa selling for $1 million

Anyone with a spare $1 million could buy a beautiful home in downtown St. Petersburg. 

Or, you could also buy a couch. 

A one-of-a-kind sofa with a seven-figure asking price made by high-end French furniture brand Roche Bobois is set to go on display Thursday at the sales gallery for the new Roche Bobois St. Pete Tower, according to a release. The couch began its life as one of the brand’s Bubble Large 3-seat sofas before St. Petersburg street artist and muralist Taylor Smith, known as Dreamweaver, transformed it into a work of art during a live event celebrating the condo project’s launch in February, the release says. 

It’s a plush investment due to the piece’s one-of-a-kind status, according to developer Valor Real Estate Development. Roche Bobois lists a standard version of the sofa for $9,650, according to its website. The company credits designer Sacha Lakic with creating its rounded, handcrafted Bubble collection. 

The costly couch is yet another unusual marketing pitch for the ultra-luxury condominium tower, which is the first Roche Bobois-branded residential tower in the U.S. Earlier this year, building developer Valor Real Estate Development and the French design house covered existing buildings on the future Roche Bobois St. Pete Tower site in pink paint as part of an art campaign ahead of the tower’s construction. 

Now, demolition is underway and construction fencing is up at the site, at 344 4th Street South in downtown St. Petersburg. Developer Valor Real Estate Development and the French design house say they plan to break ground on the joint project, a 29-story building with 164 residences ranging from studios to penthouse apartments, this year and are hoping to open the building in late 2028 or early 2029. 

According to the building’s website, buyers will be able to select Roche Bobois furniture packages for their apartments inside the luxury tower. The building will also house more than 24,000 square feet of lifestyle and wellness spaces, as well as a host of amenities including a rooftop lounge, a heated pool with a swim lane, a cantilevered jacuzzi, a fitness center, fine dining restaurants and ground-level retail. 

The sofa will be unveiled at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Roche Bobois sales gallery at 106 Central Ave. in Suite C. 

There is no word in the release on whether prospective buyers may take a seat.
