Technology: OrthoGrid Hip AI

HCA Florida Sarasota Doctors Hospital is using new AI-driven technology to help guide surgeons during total hip replacement surgery in the operating room.

The new technology debuted at the hospital on Bee Ridge Road in February and through April has been used by two surgeons. It is noninvasive and produces instantaneous measurements, grid overlays and real-time analytics, among other features.

OrthoGrip Hip AI facilitates one of the most common orthopedic procedures. More than 544,000 hip replacement surgeries are conducted annually in the United States, according to the American College of Rheumatology. Some of the challenges surgeons face during hip surgery are each patient has a unique anatomy, and doctors must be precise when positioning implants.

OrthoGrid Hip AI combines AI with live X-ray images to help surgeons make adjustments during surgeries to ensure hip implants are positioned in exactly the right place. The technology does not require additional incisions or hardware be placed into the patient.

Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Nicholas Talluri used OrthoGrip Hip AI for the first time at Doctors Hospital in February during two procedures.

“Both patients did well,” Sarasota Doctors Hospital says in a statement. “Surgeons say this is the future of total hip replacement surgery and will become more common in the orthopedic surgery field.”
