Construction has officially kicked off on the expansion and renovation of a new headquarters facilities for a Fort Myers contracting company.

B&I Contractors held a ceremonial groundbreaking Tuesday on the 94,000-square-foot project at 2701 Prince St. A spokesperson for the company says in an email that the expansion doubles its real estate footprint and triples its manufacturing space. It also allows for about 150 employs to move into a single facility.

B&I is a mechanical, electrical and plumbing specialty contractor founded in 1960. According to its website, it has five facilities, including two in Fort Myers — Prince Street and 5851 Country Lake Drive. The others are in Sarasota, Tampa and Tamarac. B&I had $247 million in revenue in 2024 and has some 1,200 employees. Its chairman, Gary Griffin, announced his retirement in September

(The spokesperson did not respond to a follow-up question asking whether bringing the employees back to a single facility meant the company would consolidate all its locations, the Fort Myers locations or some other combination.)

The expansion and renovation, which the spokesperson says is contracted at “just shy of $22 million,” is being built by Fort Myers-based Stevens Construction.

The company, in a statement, says the project includes the construction of a 12,000-square-foot metal building that will serve as office space as well as a 37,000-square-foot building that will have 5,775 square feet of office space and 31,225 square feet of manufacturing space.

Stevens also is expanding B&I’s existing building by 41,440 square feet. It will become manufacturing space. And the company will renovate a 4,000-square-foot mezzanine into office space.

The B&I spokesperson says the company expects the work to be completed in February.

Stevens' team includes Mike Alisea, Jeff Brunderman, Yoendry Campos Martinez and Gina Varner. Studio AD is the architect of record and Quattrone & Associates is the civil engineer.
