Tampa General Hospital is expanding its presence in north-central Florida with the purchase of a 53-acre property next to the TGH Crystal River Emergency Center in Citrus Hills.

The purchase marks the hospital’s largest effort to build out TGH North, the hospital’s network that spans Hernando and Citrus counties, north of Tampa Bay.

The hospital announced the Citrus Hills purchase Monday and says its plans for the site include construction of a 120-bed hospital tower, 120,000-square-foot medical office building, central energy plant and helicopter pad. The property’s location, adjacent to the existing emergency center at 6151 N. Suncoast Blvd. in Crystal River, offers a range of possibilities for TGH to continue expanding its presence in the region, the announcement says. That includes connecting residents to a broader network of providers, experts, specialists, cutting-edge medical research and complex care.

“We’re excited about the potential this expansion has to transform care for the burgeoning Citrus Hills community,” Steve Short, executive vice president of strategic growth at Tampa General, says in the release. “This new property is another opportunity to leverage the full power and scale of Tampa General’s network to connect patients we serve in the TGH North market to the same specialized services, renowned clinical expertise, coordinated care and exceptional outcomes we offer at our leading academic medical center.”

According to the Citrus County Property Appraiser, TGH purchased the Citrus Hills property Sept. 29 for $2.4 million.

The property represents the hospital’s first major expansion of its TGH North network since it launched in December 2023 with the acquisition of the Bravera Health network. In addition to the freestanding emergency room in Citrus Hills, the Bravera Health takeover put TGH in charge of two ambulatory surgery centers, 10 primary care and specialty clinics and three community hospitals: TGH Brooksville, TGH Spring Hill and TGH Crystal River.

Since the acquisition, TGH has expanded medical services within the TGH North network to include services for heart and vascular care, oncology and infant health.

TGH is a private, nonprofit academic health system and one of the largest hospitals in America. Including its TGH North facilities, the health system encompasses six hospitals, more than 150 care locations and nearly 14,000 team members and providers.
