Intercoastal Medical Group, one of the largest medical group practices in the Sarasota-Manatee region, has made a change in leadership. Effective June 1 Dr. Mark Ramos assumed the role of president, succeeding Dr. John Steele, who led the organization for more than three decades.

Founded in 1993, Intercoastal Medical Group was created when Steele and a group of local physicians partnered in an effort to preserve physician autonomy as health care systems increasingly acquired independent practices. Having previously founded Beneva Family Practice in 1986, Steele, according to a statement, guided the group’s growth into a multi-specialty practice serving patients across the Sarasota-Bradenton region.

“I didn’t set out with this in mind, but I’ve always been interested in how we can run a practice that values physicians and supports patient care,” Ramos says in the news release. “It’s an honor to continue what Dr. Steele started.”

At age 83, Steele continues to see patients daily.

Ramos, a board-certified cardiologist, has been involved in Intercoastal’s leadership for several years.

Intercoastal Medical Group operates multiple locations throughout the Sarasota-Bradenton area, providing comprehensive care across a range of specialties.
