Want to get paid more money at work? Then maybe head to Maryland or Massachusetts. Or New Jersey.

That trio of states were the top three nationally in 2021 annual household income, with each over $89,000, according to an analysis of U.S. census data.

Florida? Not so much. The Sunshine State’s annual household income is $63,302 — nearly 30% lower than the $90,203 in Maryland, which is No. 1 nationally.

The salary data comes from the U.S. Census Bureau’s annual American Community Survey and a report in The Center Square, a Florida news service.

Florida ranked No. 15 overall nationally in household income, one spot ahead of Indiana ($62,743) and one behind Montana ($63,249). The state with the lowest household income, the report shows, is Mississippi, with $48,716. Florida also comes in under the national average, which was $69,717 in 2021.

That national average is up some $4,000 higher compared to 2019, the last time the census released an annual American Community Survey, Center Square reports. Of course, as the report points out, even a $4,000 raise might not be enough to offset other cost pressures. “Severe inflation continues to plague the U.S. economy, and higher prices have been particularly hard to bear on those with lower pay. While incomes have been generally rising, they have not matched inflation, eroding real wages,” states The Center Square report.
