With many businesses in defense mode during the pandemic, one area company is going on attack mode by investing in new equipment.

Steve Levison, co-owner and president of Manatee County-based Performance Copying & Printing, tells Coffee Talk his company has made a $300,000 investment in the digital label printing and converting business. “My brother and I decided to expand by going on the offense to serve an underserved need,” he says.

Performance has offered labels to its customers in the past, but it’s sent them out to another printer that specializes in labels. “Now we’ll be able to turn labels in one to three days,” he says.

The new equipment allows Performance to print custom labels on a roll in any shape and size in house, something Levison says will be an asset for other businesses in the area as well. The service could be particularly welcome to companies that need labels for items they’re producing during the coronavirus crisis, such as the many firms that have shifted to produce hand sanitizer in recent months. “Right now, there’s a tremendous need for hand sanitizer labels,” he says.

Performance has lost business during the pandemic, Levison says, but it has also seen an increased demand for signs and posters that promote social distancing as well as directional signs and floor graphics that encourage customers to use specific traffic patterns.

This period of time has provided a good opportunity to reorganize the Performance facility, Levison says, including introducing the new labeling equipment.

Now customers can have labels printed at Performance for bottles, boxes, food products, health and wellness products and other items. The company trained its employees to use the equipment, and now they’re starting to print labels. The equipment also includes a finishing device that cuts and trims labels. Levison says, “The labeling business and packaging business are one of the few growth areas for digital and commercial printers.”
