Florida's newest municipality is now in business.
Estero, once a no-man's land of cow pastures between Fort Myers and Naples, is now an incorporated municipality.
The first meeting of the elected leaders of the Village of Estero met March 17 with all the pomp and ceremony that the event requires. Even though Estero now calls itself a village, technically it's no different from a city or town as a municipal government.
Estero is also a hot area for new development. Hertz is building its $85 million global corporate headquarters there, and Lee Memorial Health System plans to build a $140 million health care campus there that will include an emergency facility. Other new developments underway include residential communities, apartment buildings and assisted-living communities. That's on top of the Coconut Point mall that's already there, with 1.2 million square feet that dominates the center of the village.
