Hospitals in Sarasota, Tampa, ranked tops in U.S.

Seven Gulf Coast hospitals made U.S. News and World Report's list of the top 25 medical centers in Florida.

Hospitals in the top 10 include Tampa General, which was No. 2, behind Florida Hospital Orlando; Sarasota Memorial, which was No. 5, up one spot from last year; and Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, at No. 6. Other hospitals on the top 25 include: St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa (No. 14); Naples Community Hospital (No. 17); St. Anthony's Hospital in St. Petersburg (No. 19) and University Community Hospital in Tampa (No. 25). The report looked at 265 hospitals in Florida.

U.S. News and World Report puts out an annual scorecard of hospitals nationwide that looks at a variety of data points, including patient survival, safety and adequacy of nurse staffing levels. This is the 25th year the publication has ranked hospitals. State rankings are determined by how many specialties a facility has in the nationally ranked list and how many it has in the high-performing specialties list. Tampa General, for example, had four specialties on the national list: cardiology and heart surgery; nephrology; orthopedics; and urology, according to a release. Sarasota Memorial had one specialty, gynecology, on the national list.
