Axcel Development Group, the Tampa developer behind a new medical office building next to the Medical Center of Trinity, plans to create a medical office building next to Doctor's Hospital of Sarasota. It hopes to start construction in November or December on the 48,000-square-foot building. The 4.1-acre property, which formerly housed the Colonial Oaks Baptist Church, abuts the existing hospital campus. The hospital purchased it in 2004 for $3.1 million.

The new two-story building is being called Doctors Medical Plaza.

Axcel Development Group has hired Onicx LLC as the design/builder for the project, and Barry D. Edwards & Associates Inc. has been retained to market the interior space.

“The hospital will be leasing space on the first floor for some of its ancillary services,” Edwards says. “We probably have half of the first 50% just with that.

We're planning to offer turnkey build-outs for the physician spaces so they can have their space built out without having to pay out of pocket.”

The new medical plaza is scheduled to open in the mid- to late 2012.
