Gulf Coast businesses big and small have found a recession life raft in going off the Gulf Coast, many times to the Dominican Republic.

Construction firms, law offices and even a commercial kitchen design and build firm have found work in various Dominican locales the past few years. The latest to join the party: Middleburg, Va.-based Salamander Hotels & Resorts, which owns the Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club in Palm Harbor.

Salamander's project is the 30,000-acre Fishing Lodge Cap Cana, which is scheduled to open Oct. 1 under the Salamander Marina & Beach Resort flag. The resort, which includes an ocean and a forest, is open to all guest types and stays, as opposed to the all-inclusive system that dominates the area. “This is a different type of Dominican resort destination,” says Salamander founder and CEO Sheila Johnson in a statement.

The move is also significant for Salamander because it represents the first new property for the firm since it completed a $25 million overhaul of Innisbrook two years ago. The makeover at Innisbrook, which covers 900 acres, included construction of a new spa and a renovation of the fitness gyms and restaurants. (See "Beautiful Comeback," April 23, 2009.)
