There'll be a lot more to eat at St. Petersburg's Tropicana Field this baseball season besides hot dogs, peanuts and popcorn.
Centerplate, the hospitality provider for Tampa Bay Rays games, recently unveiled its list of new offerings, ranging from barbecue and gourmet burgers to gluten-free items, to add to the traditional concession staples.
The biggest change this year is the replacement of the upscale Batter's Eye restaurant overlooking centerfield, a fixture at the Trop since 1998, with Everglades BBQ Smokehouse. Everglades will feature a variety of meats smoked on site, plus a salad bar and other side items.
The Brewhouse, near the stadium's rotunda entrance, has also been upgraded with a new food menu and locally made craft beer selections. Along the first-base food court, Burger Up will offer various gourmet hamburgers made and cooked to order.
In the Center Field Street area, a stand called GF features gluten-free versions of ballpark fare, including hot dogs, pretzels and beer. For those whose internal systems are more tolerant, Wings Around the World has boneless chicken wings with a variety of sweet and hot sauces.
If you feel like you haven't spent enough on food and beverage, on top of tickets and parking, the Rays will also be selling authenticated game-used apparel items, including those worn or signed by players. Most vendors at the Trop take credit cards now.
The Rays started their 2011 season with a three-game home stand versus the Baltimore Orioles.
