Consumers across the globe are using mobile messaging technology more frequently than ever before, according to the latest data issued by Tampa-based Syniverse Technologies.

On average, Syniverse facilitated the transfer of 1.6 billion mobile messages per day in the second quarter of 2010. That represents a 22% year-over-year increase in short messaging service (SMS) usage, combined with a 202% gain in multimedia messaging service (MMS), for a 23% increase overall.

“With SMS now enabled on nearly 100 percent of the world's handsets — both smart devices as well as inexpensive feature phones — all types of mobile providers as well as new entrants to mobile are motivated to take advantage of its broad reach,” said Syniverse CEO Tony Holcombe.

Syniverse Holdings Inc., parent to Syniverse Technologies, generated $158.8 million in revenue in the second quarter of 2010.
