Roskamp Institute finds Alzheimer's slows brain cancer
Scientists at the Roskamp Institute in Sarasota including a team led by Dr. Steven Brem, a neurosurgeon with Tampa's Moffit Cancer Center, have demonstrated that mice with Alzheimer's showed a reduction in brain cancer growth as chronicled in the Journal of Neuroscience.
Brain cancer affects 612,000 people in the United States. Another 10,000 Americans are diagnosed each year with one of the most deadly brain tumors, malignant gliomas, the type tested in the study. Only 50% of patients are still alive a year after diagnosis, and 25% after two years, despite surgical and other medical treatment.
Scientists believe that the cancers in the tested mice didn't grow normally because Alzheimer's reduces blood supply in the brain. Cancers need large supplies of blood to grow tumors.
“We believe that small parts of the amyloid protein [that causes Alzheimer 's disease] may be harnessed to bring about these beneficial effects against cancer while the negative effects causing Alzheimer's are avoided,” Dr. Michael Mullan, director of the Roskamp Institute, said in a press release.

The new equipment will replace worn and scrapped blades of the F108 aircraft engines that power the KC-135 tanker aircraft.
“This is the first agreement of its kind for Belac and the U.S. Air Force for the use of [Parts Manufacturer Approval] equipment to replace components in the critical hot 'gas path' of the aircraft engine,” said Chong Yi, president of Belac. “Belac parts are subject to the same FAA requirements and scrutiny as original equipment manufacturer blades yet they cost significantly less. The Air Force is saving millions of dollars on the cost of new parts.”
The company has provided more than 43,000 PMA turbine blades to major airlines worldwide.
PMA replacement parts are FAA-certified to meet or exceed the performance, reliability and durability specifications of original manufacturer parts.
