HMA sells 30-bed unit

Health Management Associates Inc. sold a 30-bed inpatient rehabilitation unit to HealthSouth Corp., a Birmingham, Ala.-based company with a market capitalization of roughly $1.8 billion.

The rehabilitation unit is located in Ft. Smith, Ark., and will be moved from HMA's Sparks Regional Medical Center to HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Ft. Smith, a release said.

“We have a terrific relationship with Sparks Regional Medical Center and will continue to work with them,” said Terry Maxhimer, regional president for HealthSouth.
Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Based in Naples, Health Management Associates operates 58 hospitals throughout the country. The firm recently spent $152 million on a 406-bed hospital system in Florida.
