WFLA-TV in Tampa launches mobile digital TV

WFLA-TV, the NBC affiliate in Tampa, is the first broadcast television station in the market and the second Media General station to launch mobile digital television.

The real-time local broadcast service, which began during the week of Oct.11, is available on laptops, mobile phones and other portable devices.

Mobile DTV allows broadcasters to provide local content to mobile devices, including live and on-demand video. Some devices have a “chipset” already built in to receive the signal, while others require an external tuner, available at retail stores. Research shows that mobile-equipped consumers watch more television.

“In addition to now offering Mobile DTV in two TV markets, we [plan on] extending our reach to 4-6 additional markets in the coming months,” Marshall Morton, president and CEO of Media General, said in a press release. “We already serve a growing audience over numerous personal wireless devices with our e-mail, APPs, SMS, and mobile website services. We also are pleased to be [one] of 12 broadcasters who comprise the vanguard for Mobile DTV.”

Formulated Solutions Inc. quadrupling space, adding jobs

Largo-based Formulated Solutions has announced plans to move from a 30,000-square-foot to a 140,000-square-foot facility, and add 60 new high-wage pharmaceutical jobs over the next few years.

The company received assistance in finding the new facility from Pinellas County Economic Development.

“Redevelopment opportunities like this make for terrific retention tools,” explained Danielle Ruiz, business development manager for PCED, in a press release. “Using our contacts throughout the county and our real estate database, we were able to help Formulated Solutions find the right property for its expansion, and repurpose an existing vacant facility at the same time. Our staff keeps tabs on vacated parcels and buildings to assist businesses wanting to expand and/or relocate.”

Formulated Solutions has worked with PCED since early 2004. Previous projects included an expansion in 2008 that took the company from 15,000 square feet to more than 30,000.

The company develops, manufacturers and packages aerosols, tubes, liquids and semi-solids.
