Dr. Stephen Dickey, founder of Doctors Walk-In Clinic, doesn't work as much as he used to since selling the Tampa-based chain of eight urgent-care centers a year ago. But he's not any less involved in community efforts.

Dickey and his wife, Marsha, now have their names affixed to the University of Tampa's new Health and Wellness Center, near Kennedy Boulevard on the west side of campus. The two-story, 10,300-square-foot facility focuses on advocating healthy living as much as treating student illnesses, offering social, spiritual and emotional support in addition to addressing physical queries.

“It's a much-needed service for the campus,” Dickey tells Coffee Talk. The former UT trustee says he was asked by university President Ron Vaughn if he would be interested in donating to build the center.

Dickey, who was featured in the May 7 Business Review, is now in a better position to offer financial support to the downtown university after selling DWIC to MedExpress Urgent Care of Morgantown, W.Va., last November. The 65-year-old former president and CEO now serves in an “emeritus” role at DWIC, which he founded 30 years ago, but isn't particularly fond of that title. “I'm too young to retire,” he says.

The new health center at UT replaces a much smaller building on campus that saw more than 1,000 patients for health and counseling services. The university has 6,500 students enrolled this fall.
