Michael Beaumier is making working with the government look easy. In a short time, the vice president has taken revenues from defense contracts at Suffolk Construction's Sarasota office from zero to $40 million.

"We have only been at this for 18 months,” Beaumier explains.

Late last week, Suffolk Construction announced that its office in Sarasota had won its third contract with the Navy for this year, a roughly $9.5 million job to build a data center in Charleston, S.C. That gives Suffolk Sarasota an expected $30 million in revenues for the 2011 fiscal year, with $10 million more already slated for the current one.

And they submitted their first proposals in 2008.

"It's been a learning process,” Beaumier says — not just for him, but for the entire company. Suffolk Construction is making a nationwide effort to increase their work with the federal government.

And while the first government job is likely the hardest to land, Beaumier says his company will need to prepare for “some tweaking” if they hope to continue landing work with additional agencies.
