As Walter Energy Inc. continues its headquarters relocation from Tampa to Birmingham, Ala., to be closer to key coal-mining and natural gas operations, several of its top executives are staying put.
They just would really rather stay in this part of the Gulf Coast and are seeking comparable C-suite positions.
Those plans appear to be working out okay so far. Joe Troy, formerly CFO of predecessor Walter Industries, will join Tampa-based trucking company Quality Distribution Inc. as executive vice president and CFO effective Aug. 2. The company promoted Stephen Attwood to president and COO to make way for Troy's new post.
“Joe brings over 25 years of financial experience with particular expertise in capital markets, mergers and acquisitions and overall financial management,” Quality CEO Gary Enzor stated. “His skills will be invaluable as we focus on optimizing our capital structure, leveraging our strong cash flow, growing our business, and communicating with the investment community.”
Additional departures from Walter Energy's Alabama-bound moving van include president and COO George Richmond, who is retiring this month after 32 years, and Victor Patrick, who retired as CEO earlier this year. Walter announced the move last fall, relocating from Tampa's Westshore district to the Birmingham Galleria area.
“A lot of these guys have been in Tampa for a long time and they wanted to stay,” observes Kyle Parks, a former Walter Industries spokesman who now heads Bayview Public Relations in Tampa.
In the meantime, Walter is conducting a national search to replace its top executives at the Birmingham base. It is Coffee Talk's understanding that college football loyalty, barbecuing ability or hunting skills will not be factors.
