HMA sees Florida recovery

Hospital visits may not be pleasant, but patient growth is a good leading economic indicator.

In a conference call with analysts to discuss improved earnings in 2009, Health Management Associates President and Chief Executive Officer Gary Newsome says he's seeing positive signs in Florida's economy. The Naples-based company owns and manages 55 hospitals in 15 states.

“By all indications, we're seeing that the season is very strong,” says Newsome, referring to the tourism and seasonal-resident growth. “That's a great indicator.”

In addition, Newsome says the labor market is improving. “Unemployment has moderated,” he says.

HMA's Florida hospitals are primarily located in central and western portions of the state. “Florida was the first to be hit economically and the first to come back stronger,” says Kelly Curry, executive vice president and chief financial officer.
