Sarasota-based xG Technology, which is on a decade-long business mission to provide an inexpensive way to make cell phone calls over the Internet, recently made inroads into a new market: The military.
Officials with the publicly traded firm tell Coffee Talk this score is more about the recognition of the technology than actual dollars. Indeed, retired marine Col. John Coleman, who served in Iraq, joined the company because he thought so highly of the xG system. Coleman is now xG's chief operating officer.
The specific contract with the military calls for xG to install its high-tech xMax network for mobile communications at the U.S. Army's Fort Bliss Desert Training facilities in Texas and New Mexico. Fort Bliss is the Army's largest training facility and is also one of the leading areas in the military for testing new communications systems.
Says Coleman: “We are honored the Army has chosen to deploy and further evaluate the capabilities of our xMax cognitive radio.”
The military news wasn't necessarily a long-term boost to the company's stock, which trades for under 20 cents a share, but it was important in the company's ongoing fight for industry validation. For instance, prominent industry analyst Andrew Seybold recently wrote that the deal is good for both xG and the entire wireless industry.
