The U.S. Department of Transportation says many contractors are receiving faxes from fraudsters falsely claiming a relationship with the DOT. The activity appears to be part of a large-scale identity theft scheme.

The faxes often carry the title of an “Authorization to Release Financial Information,” the DOT says, and are typically signed by someone claiming to be a “Senior Procurement Officer” with the department.
