Local companies up for innovation

A trio of companies recently featured in the Review is up for recognition at the Tampa Bay Technology Forum's 2009 Industry Achievement Awards. The forum's annual awards dinner is scheduled for Nov. 12.

The companies are:

• Sarasota-based xG Technology, nominated for Emerging Technology Company of the year. Featured in the July 2 Review, xG is aiming to launch the world's first inexpensive way to provide mobile phone service over the Internet;

• Sarasota-based Medical Education Technologies, Inc., nominated for Innovation of the Year. The company, known as METI, manufactures lifelike human patient and surgical simulators for use in medical training and education. It was featured in the Aug. 13 Review, as founder Lou Oberndorf and some venture capital partners recently completed a deal to buy back the company from its publicly traded parent.

• Tampa-based Syniverse Technologies, nominated for Innovation of the year. Syniverse, which protects voice and data information, was profiled in the May 21 Review.
