A list of the top five service businesses to start based on sales growth contains one surprise: The architecture industry is back.

Architectural services, with 13.6% sales growth in the last 12 months, is the second-ranked industry on the list, compiled by Raleigh, N.C.-based financial data firm Sageworks. The top business is computers, from IT to data-processing, with 15.3% growth over the last year. The other businesses on the top five are employment, consulting and accounting. All the sectors posted stable profit margins in recent years, according to Sageworks, and all but one had profitability in the last 12 months above the average for privately held companies.

Sageworks analyst Kevin Abbas, in a release, says the study isn't only helpful for new businesses. Says Abbas: “Another interesting way to use the data to explore new business ideas is to identify some of the pain points or unmet needs for these industries that are growing and determine where you could provide support to them in some capacity, even if you are not directly in that industry.”
