Kristen Hoefer is the new CEO of Lincare Inc. in Clearwater, succeeding retiring longtime chief executive John Byrnes beginning next month.

Hoefer joins Lincare from Abbott Laboratories, a Chicago-based pharmaceutical company that has a market cap of nearly $67 billion. Hoefer ran Abbott's pharmaceutical operations in western Europe, and spent 20 years with the company.

“We're delighted that we've been able to attract the caliber of Kristen Hoefer, a proven health care executive with international experience,” said Wolfgang Buchele, CEO of Lincare parent Linde AG, in a release. “I am confident that she will continue to apply and develop the successful approach we've adopted to date in our strategically important health care business.”

Byrnes had run Lincare since 1997. Buchele said Byrnes helped grow the company into the largest home care group in the country. Lincare is the country's top respiratory home care company, according to a release. Respiratory home care involves the treatment of patients with chronic respiratory diseases in settings other than hospitals, including oxygen and inhalation therapy.

Linde acquired Lincare in 2012, turning that company into the world's largest health care provider in the gases industry. Last year, Linde generated more than $3.4 billion through its health care business.

Lincare has more than 1,100 locations in 48 states, including 62 locations in Florida.
