While many companies struggle to hire people amid the ongoing seismic reshuffling of the workplace, a Sarasota architecture firm has actually had some sweet success in that area.

Sweet Sparkman Architecture and Interiors has hired 10 new team members since March 2020, bumping the company’s number of employees to 31. That's a 47% jump in payroll, boosted, in part executives say, by "a lot of Zoom interviews.”

“The pandemic actually allowed us to spread our "net" and hire from areas outside of Florida,” Todd Sweet, partner, adds in an email. “Working remotely made us realize that hiring someone from Philadelphia or New York can provide the same level of support as someone working remotely in Sarasota.”

The company filled positions with backgrounds across the board, from project manager and interior designer roles to project designer and professional service roles. The areas of the country (or outside of the country) varied as well, and include the Northeast and Midwest, says Sweet. He credits the Sarasota area to being attractive to many in that regard.

“Cold winters and higher taxes elsewhere contributed to our success of bringing young talent to our practice,” he says.

A press release credits the growth to the fast-moving housing market and the firm’s expansion of services offered — especially the full-scale interior design arm added in 2018. The release also states the firm’s representatives expect the hiring spree to continue through the end of the year, noting there’s been a push to hire experienced project managers and architects.
