A Minnesota medical device supplier has acquired a Manatee County company that provides ophthalmic surgical products. Innovia Medical purchased Hurricane Medical for an undisclosed price.

Hurricane Medical manufactures items like single-use ophthalmic surgical devices, such as microsurgery accessories, anesthesia needles and ophthalmic sponges, among other products, according to its website. Based on Lena Road, near the intersection of Interstate 70 and State Road 70, Hurricane Medical was founded in 1999.

Innovia Medical is a “family of specialty surgical companies” that is headquartered in St. Paul, Minnesota, and serves more than 70 countries, according to its website. Its specialties include ear, nose and throat; ophthalmology; aesthetic and reconstructive; single-use instruments; and sterile processing.

“Hurricane Medical adds a complementary range of ophthalmic solutions, backed by strong manufacturing capabilities and a deep commitment to customer service,” Innovia Medical CEO Terry Meredith says in a statement.

Through the acquisition, the same sales and service contacts will remain in place, according to the statement, which says the transaction is expected to result in increased resources, broader product portfolios and enhanced capabilities.

“We see a tremendous opportunity to grow Hurricane Medical’s product coverage through Innovia Medical’s commercial reach and global infrastructure,” Hurricane Medical President Dell Bauslaugh says in a statement. “We are excited for what this means for our customers and our team.”

Innovia Medical is backed by Philadelphia-based private investment firm Inverness Graham Investments.
