PUNTA GORDA — As of Friday, Oct. 8, Minnesota residents can get to Southwest Florida much easier, with the debut of a pair of new nonstop routes.

The flights are from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport to the Punta Gorda Airport in Charlotte County, on Allegiant and Sun Country Airlines, respectively.

Staff with the Punta Gorda Airport welcomed passengers coming from the Gopher State from MSP airport, first on the Sun Country flight at 12:28 p.m. and then on the Allegiant flight at 2:34 p.m. Passengers, according to a statement, were scheduled to be greeted with fresh oranges and giveaways at a welcome table in baggage claim at the Bailey Terminal.  Passengers could also take a photo at the airport’s new photo op spot in the corridor just south of baggage claim, to share on social media.

Both Allegiant and Sun Country flights are scheduled Mondays and Fridays October through January, according to a statement. During February, March and April both airlines have flights from PGD to MSP on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, the release adds.

“Our community is excited about welcoming new visitors from Minnesota to sunny Southwest Florida,” Punta Gorda Airport CEO James Parrish says in the statement. “Travelers landing at our convenient airport can enjoy an array of outdoor activities surrounding Charlotte Harbor and can explore historic waterfront Punta Gorda to the beautiful Gulf beaches within a 45-minute drive.”
