Nike has set Aug. 19 as the opening day for its new Tampa store.
But before you head out in search of the new pair of Air Max, there are a few things you should be aware of. Namely that this isn’t going to be one of those massive Nike Stores you see on 5th Avenue in Manhattan or one packed with merchandise like at the outlets up and down Interstate 75.
No, what’s coming to Tampa’s Hyde Park Village next month is a smaller concept store that caters to Nike Plus members. The company opened the first of these concepts stores in Los Angeles in 2018 and its since spread to several cities, including Tokyo.
The idea behind the stores is the locations have “pop-up vibes,” the sportswear giant says.
The Nike Live stores “will operate like an experimental digital-meets-physical retail pilot — but it’s not going anywhere anytime soon and the products and services that will be ‘tested’ there are based on a deep understanding of the neighborhood,” according to the statement.
The store is going to offer styles popular in Tampa and will have new merchandise coming in every couple of weeks, some of it exclusive. Nike decides what’s most popular in local markets based on buying patterns and data gleaned online and from mobile apps.
The 4,400-square-foot store, which will be called Nike By Hyde Park, will be at 1520 W. Swann Ave., in space previously occupied by LA Fitness.
Right now, the façade is boarded up as crews work inside. But plans filed with the city show the front of the store will be covered with a colorful mural featuring runners.
