Former U.S. Supreme Court clerk named chair of public TV board

Jim Hale has been on the WGCU Public Media Advisory Board since 2013.

FORT MYERS — Southwest Florida resident Jim Hale, a onetime U.S. Supreme Court law clerk and former Target and General Mills Corp. executive, has been named chair of the WGCU Public Media Advisory Board.

Hale, who joined the board of the Southwest Florida PBS and NPR programming entity in 2013, will serve a two-year term as chair, according to a statement. He’s the board’s immediate past vice chair and follows outgoing chair Judy Bricker, the release adds.

Hale, who moved to the region with his wife, Shannon, in 2007, is a graduate of Dartmouth College and the University of Minnesota Law School. He clerked for U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren in 1965-66, the release states, where he “spent a significant amount of this time helping to draft the Miranda opinion.”

He later oversaw international acquisitions at General Mills and then joined Dayton Hudson Corp., which was renamed Target Corp. in 1981. He was executive vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary until his retirement from Target in 2004. 

 “I am honored to be chosen to chair the board at WGCU,” Hale said. “Since meeting (WGCU General Manager) Rick Johnson eight years ago I have enjoyed being a part of such a respected organization and look forward to helping lead it to even greater success.”

As a member-supported service of Florida Gulf Coast University, WGCU’s mission is to provide educational programming that inspires, informs and engages the community. Serving all or part of 12 counties in South and Southwest Florida, with five distinct digital TV channels, two FM radio channels and two HD radio channels and multiple websites, WGCU delivers national and international programming and develops and produces local programs to the region.
