CAPE CORAL — Encompass Health Rehabilitation, a national health care firm, has acquired a 7.31-acre site in Cape Coral for $4.08 million.

Birmingham, Ala.-based Encompass Health plans to build a freestanding, 40-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital on the site, to be named Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Cape Coral. Encompass Health bought the site, at 1730 NE Pine Island Rd., from LG Pine Island and Pondella LLC, according to a statement.

Justin Thibaut of f LSI Companies Inc. represented the seller, while Enn Luthringer of CRE Consultants represented buyer. “This transaction highlights the continuing growth and development along the Pine Island Road corridor in Cape Coral,” Thibaut, president of LSI Cos., says in the release. “As evidenced by numerous commercial and retail development transactions that have occurred over the last 12 months, we are experiencing delivery of product to a deserving market and expect this trend to continue as the city grows and evolves.”

In a separate blog post in August, Encompass Health says the facility is driven by the rapid population growth in Southwest Florida. “The Cape Coral and Fort Meyers areas continue to grow, and with that comes the need for additional health care services,” says Linda Wilder, president of Encompass Health’s southeast region, in the post. “Given our long tenure operating hospitals in Florida for over 30 years, we’ve watched the need for intensive rehabilitation services increase in those communities.”

Encompass Health has 12 rehabilitation hospitals operating in Florida, with plans to open several more in the next several years. One is forthcoming in Naples, and new hospitals are in development in five other locations in the state, the company says.

The hospital will feature all private patient rooms, a spacious therapy gym with advanced rehabilitation technologies and an activities of daily living suite, cafeteria, dining room, pharmacy and therapy courtyard.

Complementing local acute care services, the hospital, the company says, will care for patients recovering from debilitating illnesses and injuries including strokes and other neurological disorders, brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, amputations and complex orthopedic conditions. The hospital will provide physical, occupational and speech therapies that aim to restore functional ability and quality of life and 24‑hour care by registered nurses, many of whom are certified in rehabilitation nursing.

Encompass Health operates 136 hospitals, 245 home health locations and 83 hospice locations in 39 states and Puerto Rico.
