Fort Myers Mayor Randy Henderson has announced he will run for Congress, in the seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Francis Rooney, R-Naples.

A Republican, Henderson joins a crowded field to replace Rooney, who announced in October he plans to retire and not run for what would be a third term. Others who have announced they will run for the seat in 2020 include State Rep. Dane Eagle, R-Cape Coral, the state House Majority Leader. The district includes parts of Cape Coral, Fort Myers, Naples and Marco Island, plus Southwest Florida International Airport and Florida Gulf Coast University.

A one-time banker who switched to real estate development and property management, Henderson, 63, is a popular champion of Fort Myers. He began his third time in November 2017, becoming the first mayor in the city’s history elected three consecutive terms, according to a statement. Prior to being elected mayor in November 2009, Henderson served for nine years on the Fort Myers City Council.

“My 10 years as mayor, including nine years on the City Council, has provided insight and vast experience working in the public sector including solving complex issues while improving the quality of life for the citizens of Fort Myers,” he says in a statement. “I believe this experience provides me the background to lead the charge for serving citizens in District 19 and bring focus and support from Washington to our district.”

Henderson says key components of his platform will be consistent with that of his past leadership including a focus on the environment, quality of life, expansion of business and infrastructure and modernizing and preparing the region to manage catastrophic occurrences.

Henderson has been a resident of Fort Myers for 40 years. He was born and raised in North Carolina where he graduated from Mars Hill College in 1979. He’s currently CEO of Corbin Henderson Co., a real estate firm, serving since 1986.
