Florida, partially due to its large and diverse population, managed to score a top five ranking in a new report on energy jobs from E2, Environmental Entrepreneurs.

Florida is No. 3 in the report, with 158,652 total clean energy jobs. The bulk of Florida’s clean energy jobs are in energy efficiency, where it has 118,412. In solar, according to the report, Florida has 10,528 jobs, while in clean vehicles it has 9,360.

A pro-clean environment group comprised of business leaders, E2 reports that nearly every state posted an increase in clean energy jobs in 2018, combining to add about 110,000 net new jobs. That’s up 3.6% over 2017, to a total of 3.26 million clean energy jobs.

The top 10 states for clean energy jobs, for the most part, mirror population totals. The No. 1, state in the report, California, of course, backs up its population heft with multiple pro-clean environment regulations. People and policies, combined, is mostly why the Golden State has 512,934 clean energy jobs — more than double the No. 2 state on the report, Texas, which has 233,447 total clean energy jobs.

Part of the clean-jobs surge in Texas stems from its wind energy sector, which, the report shows, is responsible for 25,386 jobs. Eight states in the top 10 have less than 6,000 wind-aided jobs and four have less than 2,000, pointing partially to the sector’s controversy in generating returns versus environmental impact.

One state that didn’t make the top 10, has, instead, produced a lot of clean energy buzz: Nevada. Clean energy jobs increased 32.43% in 2018 in Nevada, the report states “in large part because of growth in battery-storage jobs related to Tesla’s Gigafactory.”
