International cancer care group recruits industry leader

21st Century Oncology taps Charlie Powell as COO as the company continues to build its leadership team.

FORT MYERS — International provider of integrated cancer care 21st Century Oncology named Charlie Powell chief operating officer, bringing to the company a background in physician practice, ambulatory facility and hospital leadership experience in health systems and private practices. 

Powell previously served as president, physician enterprise and ambulatory for Saints Mary and Elizabeth Hospital with KentuckyOne Health in Louisville. Powell’s accomplishments in establishing physician-led governance structures and increasing quality, safety and service scores while improving revenue cycle operations; in addition to his expertise in turnaround, population health and strategic planning fit 21st Century Oncology’s vision for the future, firm officials say in a statement. 

“Over the past year, we have been fortunate to continue to expand our leadership team with extraordinary health care leaders,” says 21st Century Oncology CEO Kim Commins-Tzoumakas in the statement. “Charlie is no exception and will play a key role in our expansion and evolution this year.”

Prior to KentuckyOne Health, Powell was CEO physician services at Saint Thomas Health in Nashville, Tenn.; CEO of Northeast Georgia Heart Center in Gainesville, Ga.; and COO of Piedmont HealthCare in Statesville, N.C.

Headquartered in Fort Myers, 21st Century Oncology employs or is affiliated with more than 928 physicians. It operates 169 treatment centers, including 131 centers in 16 U.S. states and 36 centers in eight countries in Latin America.
