Training with a championship boxer just got easier.

This fall, Sweet Science Boxing & Fitness gym in Naples launched a new mobile boxing training app, Sweet Science+.

Billy Lyell, a boxer and owner of Sweet Science gym, and Kelly “The Ghost” Pavlik, a former world champion boxer, co-founded and developed the app.

“The gym in Naples is jam-packed,” Lyell tells Coffee Talk. “We’re doing great. We really wanted to bring the gym to the world.”

Created with the help of Divine Digital Agency in Naples, the app is currently only available for Apple devices. They wanted to start with one platform, but Lyell says he’s gotten several emails and Facebook messages asking about an Android version too.

They did a soft release at the end of September, and so far, about 50 people have downloaded the app, and it has about a dozen five-star ratings. “It’s a process,” Lyell says. “The most important thing is we have a great product.”

Through the Sweet Science+ app, users have access to content including video tutorial training sessions with champion boxers, nutrition plans and progress tracking. The app is free to download and preview. To do the workouts, there’s a monthly fee of $20. If users want to do the workouts and have access to a nutrition plan, the monthly fee is $30.

Lyell and Pavlik have gotten the word out about the app through social media and word of mouth. Lyell says Pavlik is a superstar in the world of boxing, so Pavlik’s following on Facebook and Instagram has helped people discover the app.

It’s also been popular with Lyell’s clients from the Sweet Science gym. “We have some seasonal people who aren’t down yet downloading it and excited about it,” Lyell says. He says those residents tell him they can’t find anything like the gym up north, so the app serves a need when they’re away from Naples.

One of the key goals of the app, Lyell says, was clear: “Provide what we feel is the best workout possible to the widest audience possible.” There was another mission, too, he says, “We really want to teach an authentic boxing workout at the same time.”
