Marriott Edition to Water Street Tampa?

In the wake of its announcement that a JW Marriott hotel will join an enhanced Tampa Marriott Waterside and Marina in Water Street Tampa, don't be surprised if developer Strategic Property Partners LLC's next hotel within its $3 billion project is a Marriott Edition.

Edition, a “global luxury lifestyle brand” Marriott International Inc. rolled out a few years ago, has been selective. To date, just hotels worldwide carry the flag, in Miami Beach, New York, London and Sanya, China. In all, the four hotels contain 1,266 rooms, according to Marriott's website.

Marriott makes no mention of Tampa on its website, and officials from M18 Public Relations in New York City, which has worked with Strategic Property Partners, did not respond to an email for comment regarding the planned hotel.

If Marriott Edition becomes the third Water Street Tampa lodging property, the Bethesda, Md.-based hotel operator would control nearly 1,400 rooms at various price points near the Tampa Convention Center, Amalie Arena and other downtown venues.

Marriott executive Noah Silverman, in a January statement officially announcing the development of the 519-room JW Marriott, says the company is “thrilled to be a part of SPP's impressive Water Street Tampa project.”

That 26-story hotel is slated to be completed in 2020.

(This story was updated to reflect that M18 Public Relations was the entity that didn't respond to comment.)
