FORT MYERS — More passengers on fewer flights are traveling in and out of Southwest Florida International Airport. Passenger count in June was a record-setting 546,159 for the month, representing an increase of 3.4% over June 2017, according to a statement. At 5.5 million, year-to-date passenger traffic is up 5.2% over the same period last year.

That increase comes in despite of a continuing trend of fewer aircraft operations at the airport, which had 4,850 arrivals and departures in June, a 6.3% decrease compared to June 2017, the release adds.

Delta Air Lines served the most passengers at the airport with 133,000 traveling to and from Fort Myers. Delta was followed by Southwest Airlines with 122,838 passengers, American with 92,300, JetBlue at 67,451 and United serving 49,819.

In addition, more than 2.5 million pounds of air freight moved through the airport in June, an increase of about 200,000 pounds over June last year.

Southwest Florida International Airport served more than 8.8 million passengers in 2017 and is one of the top 50 U.S. airports for passenger traffic.
