LARGO — Sunshine Ace Hardware, a Naples based family owned and operated chain of hardware stores, is expanding to Pinellas County.

The expansion stems from an acquisition: Sunshine Ace Hardware recently bought Hammerhead's Ace Hardware in Largo, and Sunshine officials, in a release, say “the company is also actively expanding throughout the state.”

The 42,000-square-foot Largo store marks the eighth location under the Sunshine Ace banner, according to the statement. Terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

The Gessert family opened Hammerhead's Ace Hardware in 2005. The family previously owned and operated hardware stores in Dunedin and Oldsmar, the release states, before they built the Hammerhead business complex at 1015 West Bay Drive, Largo.

“Hammerhead's Ace Hardware built a great business, which naturally attracted our attention,” Sunshine Ace Hardware President Michael Wynn says in a statement. “Their great product assortments, care for their associates and focus on customer service aligns perfectly with our values at Sunshine Ace Hardware. We look forward to continuing to grow our suite of Florida hardware businesses, and join communities where we can establish and nurture strong relationships.”

Sunshine Ace Hardware appointed Hammerhead's Ace Hardware employee Jeffery Gawel store manager, a role formerly held by Bill Gessert, the previous owner. Gawel brings more than 28 years of hardware store experience to Sunshine Ace Hardware, according to the release. Hammerhead's Ace Hardware employees will continue in their current roles, the release adds.

Established in 1958, Sunshine Ace Hardware is one of the largest family-owned home improvement and outdoor recreation retailers in Collier County. It has locations in Naples, Marco Island, Bonita Springs, Fort Myers, Port Charlotte and now Largo.
