FORT MYERS — Construction has begun on a 57,000-square-foot, post-acute care skilled nursing unit for Lee Health.
The facility, scheduled for completion in 2019, will provide post-acute services for patients needing short-term medical recovery and rehabilitation after their hospital stays. Named the Gulf Coast Medical Center Skilled Nursing Unit, the 75-bed medical facility is designed with a homelike approach with three separate units, according to a statement. Each unit houses an open-concept living room, kitchen, nurse station and 25 private patient beds with convenient access to occupational and physical therapy rooms.
The developer behind the project is Aquila Healthcare Development, the release adds. Fort Myers-based Stevens Construction is the builder, and Studio+ is the architecture firm. The facility is at 13960 Plantation Road.
“The addition of the 75 beds in the new skilled nursing unit near Gulf Coast Medical Center is an existing and welcome addition to the continuum of care in Southwest Florida,” Lee Health President and CEO Dr. Larry Antonucci says in the release. “We are very appreciative to Stevens Construction for the quick commencement of construction and the quality of their work.”
Lee Health, with six hospitals in the system and multiple other practices, is one of the largest medical operations in the state.
