FORT MYERS — Lee Memorial Hospital has opened a new 18-bed skilled nursing unit.

The new unit, say Lee Health officials in a statement, will offer patients a quick transition from hospital to skilled care within the same building. That will allow "increased access to hospital beds in the community through timely discharges," the hospital adds in the statement.

The new unit features a therapy gym open seven days a week and a dining room. Other amenities of the unit include: Wireless internet in all rooms; computer workstation; expanded visiting hours; on-demand dining; and access to the gift and coffee shop areas within the hospital.

Fort Myers-based Lee Health is one of the largest nonprofit hospital systems in the region.
