Florida's Gulf Coast region, when it comes to sports and adventure destination nationwide, plays at a high caliber level — starting with Naples.

The city ranked No. 9 on a nationwide list of top sports and adventure spots for travelers, based on an analysis of TripAdvisor reviews from consulting and research firm Resonance. Oahu, Maui and Hawaii islands came in No. 1 through No. 3, respectively, while San Diego is No. 4 and Destin is No. 5 in the study, the U.S. Tourism Quality Index Report. The Tampa-St. Petersburg region came in one spot ahead of Naples. Sarasota is No. 15, and Fort Myers is No. 16.

Resonance's methodology, according to a statement, was based on the number of very good or excellent reviews a destination received on TripAdvisor in the Outdoor Activities and Boat Tours & Water Sports categories. Resonance measured five other categories: culture, entertainment, sightseeing, culinary and lodging.

Other rankings from cities in the Gulf Coast region include:

• Tampa/St. Petersburg ranked No. 14 out of the top 20 cities for entertainment, one spot behind Houston and one spot ahead of Philadelphia;

• Tampa/St. Petersburg ranked No. 18 on the sightseeing list, behind Miami and ahead of Savannah, Ga.;

• Tampa/St. Petersburg ranked No. 20 in the culinary category;

• Tampa/St. Petersburg ranked No. 14 in lodging, behind Austin and ahead of Atlanta;

• No city in the region — or all of Florida — made the top 20 in the culture category.
