Like it does every spring, Builder magazine recently ranked the top 100 builders and the next 100 up-and-comers nationwide by the number of closings in 2015. This year, eight homebuilders headquartered on the Gulf Coast made the cut. Six rose in rank from last year — further evidence of the housing rebound.
New on the list this year was Minto Communities Florida, making its first appearance at No. 56. Minto has been building for decades on Florida's east coast but has made a big push into Southwest Florida with developments from Naples to Sun City Center since the recession. Minto ranked third behind Neal Communities and WCI Communities among regionally based builders for closings in 2015.
Only one Florida builder cracked the top 10: Lennar, which repeated in second place with 24,292 closings last year. The top builder was Texas-based D.R. Horton, with 36,736 closings in 2015. Both national builders are active on the Gulf Coast.
