FORT MYERS — Homebuilders in Lee County pulled fewer building permits for new homes in April compared with the same month one year ago.

In a sign that the housing market in Southwest Florida may be cooling, builders pulled permits for 93 single-family homes in Lee County in April. That's a 32% drop from the same month one year ago when builders pulled 136 permits, according to the Lee County Community Development department.

Still, multifamily and commercial construction remained steady in April, the data show. In April, builders pulled permits for 28 multifamily units in Lee County compared with eight units in April 2015.

Commercial builders pulled permits valued at $1.7 million in April for general commercial construction in Lee County. That compares with permits valued at $1.8 million in the same month one year ago.
