With nearly 100 mergers, the past year was a benchmark for law firm acquisitions and partnerships, according to a report from Altman Weil, a law practice consulting firm.

In total, there were 91 law firm combinations in 2015, according to Altman Weil's MergerLine, an online database. That's the highest annual total in the nine years MergerLine has compiled the data, up from 88 mergers in 2013. More than one-fourth, 28%, of all law firms acquired in 2015 were headquartered in the southern United States, with the largest concentration in Florida and Texas, the report adds.

Law firm behemoth Dentons was the biggest buyer in 2015. The firm closed on eight mergers or acquisitions in 2015, the report shows, and went from 2,500 attorneys to 7,400 worldwide. The tally of 2015 mergers on the Gulf Coast includes Birmingham, Ala.-based Bradley Arant's acquisition of Tampa-based Glenn Rasmussen; Valley Forge-based Chartwell Law Offices' acquisition of Tampa-based Wadsworth Huott; and Fort Lauderdale-based Brock & Scott's acquisition of Tampa-based Ronald R. Wolfe & Associates.
