NAPLES — The City of Naples Airport Authority named former American Airlines executive Donna Messer chair for 2016.

Messer heads a Naples firm that specializes in coaching, mentoring, team building and facilitation, and consults on labor management collaboration. She previously spent three decades with American Airlines in a variety of executive positions.

Recently, Elite Airways announced regularly scheduled commercial flights between Naples and Newark, N.J., and Portland, Maine. The charter operator is based in Portland and is the first carrier to offer commercial flights from Naples in nine years.

Delta Connection and smaller carriers pulled out of the Naples airport in 2007 when the recession deepened and nearby Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers increased its market dominance. Since then, the airport has flirted with commercial airlines, including most recently with discount airline JetBlue flying from the New York City area.

The Naples airport has a history of commercial air travel, however. In 1979, for example, 230,000 passengers passed through the airport. As late as 1995, the airport reported 175,500 passengers.
