Floridians might love their sunshine, but they sure don't like to share it.

The state basically flunked a new survey from financial data firm WalletHub that looked at the most charitable states in the country. Florida ranked No. 44 on the list, and with California was one of two states to make the bottom 10 in both of the survey's main categories: volunteering and service and charitable giving.

More stinginess: The Sunshine State scored dead last nationwide in the sub-category of lowest volunteer rate, WalletHub reports.

Florida, with an overall score of 47.80, ranked one spot behind Louisiana and one spot ahead of Montana on the survey. The top three states on the survey are Utah, Minnesota and North Dakota, while the bottom three are Texas, California and Arizona.

WalletHub evaluated volunteering and service, in addition to charitable giving, in 13 total metrics, each scored on a 100-point scale with 100 being the most charitable. The study then calculated the overall score for each state based on the weighted average across all metrics.

Metrics for volunteering and service include a state's volunteer rate; volunteer retention rate; number of volunteer hours per capita, which weighed double in the survey; community service requirement for high school graduation; and percentage of population that collects and distributes food and clothes.

Metrics for charitable giving include percentage of adjusted gross income donated, which weighed double; percentage of people who claim to have donated their time; number of public charities per capita; charity regulations; number of Feeding America Food Banks per capita; and percentage of sheltered homeless.
