Iraq may be a dangerous place to operate, but that hasn't stopped U.S. companies from doing business there.

The latest American firm to venture back to the war-torn country is Estero-based Hertz Equipment Rental, the heavy equipment rental arm of the car rental giant.

Hertz Equipment Rental recently announced plans to license with Houston-based Khudairi Group to provide rental equipment in Iraqi cities Baghdad, Basra, Erbil and Sulaimani.

Iraq needs to rebuild its oil sector after years of destruction, and that's fueling the need for the heavy machines Hertz rents. That includes earthmovers, power equipment and other heavy machinery used for large construction projects.

The move is part of Hertz' expansion into the Middle East. Khudairi Group already operates in Saudi Arabia and Qatar and has ambitions to expand throughout the region.
