PLANS, DESCRIPTION:
The Sky Family Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) purchased the three-building Suncoast Worship Center Church of God property for $2.6 million.

The price equated to $46 per square foot. That figure is less than the two-year average price per square foot for office space ($119) in the Tampa Bay area, according to the CoStar Group.

The 12.9-acre parcel features a 42,912-square-foot fellowship hall building, 10,832-square-foot church sanctuary and a 1,620-square-foot shed/out-building.

The YMCA plans to use the fellowship hall to house a new charter middle school.

Mischa Kirby, a spokeswoman for the YMCA, says the nonprofit had received a number of requests for a school on the Sarasota County portion of Englewood similar to the charter school the YMCA runs near its Venice campus.

“We were originally going to build it, when we saw this opportunity,” she says.

The school will house up to 300 kids and will teach just sixth and seventh grades in its first year. It will eventually include eighth grade as well.

The YMCA plans to lease out the sanctuary building to a church.
