Transitions Optical may have found a way to “make it work.”
The Pinellas Park-based lens manufacturer hired “Project Runway” star Tim Gunn to help customers find new ways to make eyeglasses fashionable.
“Tim Gunn is an icon in the fashion world,” Transitions North America marketing director Patience Cook says in a release. “His insights epitomize what it is like to see things from a new, unique and exciting perspective.”
Gunn's main job will be to provide tips for both men and women about how they can look good and stylish while brandishing eyeglasses. Gunn has even gone the extra step of replacing his trademark eyeglasses with Transition lenses, which automatically darken in sunlight.
Transitions didn't say how much Gunn was being paid to promote the company's photochromic adaptive lens. But the firm expects Gunn's continuing popularity in both the fashion and reality television world to give Transitions a boost.
The company is a joint venture between PPG Industries and Essilor International. While it has mostly stayed away from celebrity endorsements, Transitions has worked to get its brand out there. That includes a three-year stint as the title sponsor of what has since become the Valspar Championship, a PGA golf tournament held each year in Palm Harbor.
